Reality bites

First of all,

This post is purely meant to bring out the thoughts about how social networking websites have changed the way of thinking among people of different regions, religions and backgrounds.

Lets start from the beginning. I'm sure most of you'll remember 'Orkut'. It happened to be one of the first social networking websites that made an attempt to bring friends and relatives closer to each other on a different platform. And boy, what a success it was. Millions of users from all over the world had created accounts, added millions of pictures, and were creating 'threads' to catch up on various topics, half of which made no sense at all.

It was a good attempt no doubt by the creators to try and connect more and more people. I guess the fate of this ever-so-popular website landed in the wrong direction when its creators did not know how to control it. Users began posting all kinds of vulgar pictures, posts and also went overboard in terms of offensive content.

It was at this time that some whizkid came up with the brilliant idea of bringing to life a brand new idea. This new idea was called Facebook. From the new movie social networking which was meant to portray how Facebook came into existence, i learnt that it started off as a brilliant program created by a college grad to vote for the most popular face on campus. It sure went a long way from being a platform to vote out the most popular face in campus to being a platform for people all around the globe to connect.

I still remember the days when i had an Orkut account and had no clue about Facebook. In fact i had not even heard about it. Back then Facebook was considered a platform where only the cream of highly intellectual people had accounts and kept in touch. It was not before long that word spread like wild fire and millions of other commoners began creating accounts adding to the income of the creator.

Before people could realize it, Facebook was like a county that was rapidly growing in population. Come to think of it, its the largest populated after countries like China and India!.

This boom in social networking came with its own share of drawbacks. People were actually getting addicted to this newly invented creation. Issues were raised worldwide about children not paying attention to school work coz of the time they spent on Facebook. It was like a major pastime. Elders were using it as a platform to vent out their frustrations about various issues, not realizing that millions of others were also reading the same comments and reacting in different ways.

Before people realized, Facebook was all over. Nearly half of mankind has an account on Facebook and its like a status symbol to have an account on this great platform!. You meet a new/old friend and the first thing he/she asks you is "do you have an account on Facebook?". Its like the entire basis of having a friend has shifted and depends on weather one has an account on Facebook. Your not on Facebook and you could lose some valued friends!.

Its funny to think of how something like Facebook has influenced our lives. There are a lot of positives and they are followed by an equal number of negatives but i guess that's how businesses work. Isn't it?.
